The Importance of Our
Community Center in Peoria IL

The Nannie M. Johnson Community Center in Peoria IL serves an important purpose. Operating under New Beginnings Ministries of Peoria, the community center makes a difference. Lives of North Side youth, teens and adults feel the positive impact every day. In addition, the community center acts as a blessing for all of Peoria. In transforming the former Kingman School at 3129 N.E. Madison Avenue, we have created a community outreach building. We have made it a place where people can be helped mentally, emotionally, physically and spiritually. In addition, the community center offers the following services:

  • T.S.O.
  • Robotics
  • Math Academy
  • Cosmetology Classes
  • Dynasty Dance
  • Physical/Healthy Activities
  • Youth Development
  • Food/Clothing Pantry

Transformation Phase 2 for Nannie M. Johnson Community Center in Peoria IL

Meanwhile, the second phase – Up and Running – will focus on expanding services and implementation of classes in our S.T.R.E.A.M. model. What is S.T.R.E.A.M.? Our model will emphasize providing education and job application in Science, Technology, Reading, Engineering, Art and Math classes. These classes are compliant with Peoria School District 150 requirements and will be offered as after-school programs. Students receive credits for arcade gaming sessions, online shopping and field trips. In addition, we need volunteers to help with nutritional education, job prep, tutoring and youth sports camps.

Transformation Phase 3 for Nannie M. Johnson Community Center in Peoria IL

Finally, the third phase – Make It Better – aims to improve the overall facility and expand its use. Since this phase includes projects not essential to building operation, we can patiently wait for volunteers to help. Our goals include making the building energy efficient. In addition, we aim to add an elevator, handicapped ramp, playground and a community garden. We also want to open more rooms to add arcade gaming space.
